And so it ends. A four to one vote by the Ware County BOE has decided that the little red schoolhouse, that we so fondly call Ware Magnet, is not worth maintaining any longer. A room full of teary-eyed students, teachers, and parents were informed that the current juniors may never reach the Graduation Stage, and be handed a Ware Magnet Diploma. This is the same for the sophomores, the freshmen, as well as every other student in grades below them. The parents were also informed that their young children, who aren't even attending regular school yet, may never have the privilege to call themselves a Ware Magnet Eagle. The teachers were informed that they may, or may not, have a job next year, as well as the other faculty members. And the current Seniors were informed that they will most likely be the last graduating class of the school that they have known and loved for so many years.
After the meeting, a crowd gathered outside the board office. And as the News Camera rolled, it caught a glimpse of the crowd. Yes, there were a few who were visibly angry. But what the news cameras really focused in on was the growing circle of people, holding hands and singing together. As the lines of Ware Magnets Alma Mater grew louder as more and more people joined, the cameras caught one big extended family bonding together in a time of need. This crowd of students sang through their tears, and represented a school, and family, they love dearly. These students have now banded together in an effort to go to any lengths necessary to svae Ware Magnet. And if I know the Ware Magnet students, they will definitely be a force to be reckoned with.
Even though the school could possibly be closed, Ware Magnet will go nowhere. Ware Magnet is so much more than a school, so much more than a building. Ware Magnet is walking down a halllway as a kindergartener, and your name being known by every senior. Ware Magnet is a honor's program where parents come to watch their children rewarded for their hard work. Ware Magnet is students bonding together, and giving any money they have on them, to help a fellow student whose home was lost in a tornado. Ware Magnet is a Prinicpal who walks down the halls among the students, and makes it a point to know each and every child's name. Ware Magnet is being given so little in the way of financial support, and exceeding so spectacularly through the efforts of passionate teachers and willing students. Ware Magnet is Teachers spending hours after school to help a struggling child understand the days lesson. And Ware Magnet is a group of students standing outside a board office singing their school's Alma Mater through their tears, standing proudly, defiantly, obstinately in face of their schools closure.
And this May, after the last graduating class of Ware Magnet walks across that stage, a building could bel be shut down. And the doors could close for possibly the last time. And as one door closes... another one is opened. Through these struggles the past few months, the students at Ware Magnet have shown what character really is. The students have worked together, cried together, and prayed together, and their faith as christians has never faltered, only grown. The support within the WCMS family is so strong, and all grade levels are helping each other out. Just today, Ive watched Seniors comfort the juniors, and vice versa, and all grade levels doing their best to reach out to their Ware Magnet Family.
I dont write these notes for attention, or to seem smart. I write them because I love the Magnet School. I write them because I know Im not the only one whose life has been changed in that little school that was never supposed to succeed. And I write them because its the only way I know how to cope. Id like to thank everyone whose thoughts and prayers have gone out to the school, and who have fought so hard for so long to save a school, and a home. Everybody is taking the closing of the school pretty hard, and i'd like to ask that we all reach out to those who are hurting right now. Don't let other people get to you, and show yourself as a student of Ware Magnet through your integrity.
(and Colbi, dont read this aloud in class please:) )
Again, Thank you
